At our regular monthly group meeting we welcomed two guest speakers from local organisations to tell us more about their work.

Citizens UK

Citizens’ UK

Chris Waddilove from Citizens’ UK , Taunton group, explained the aims of his organisation as “empowering citizens to change lives”, using people power to oppose state power, make politicians accountable and support local organisations. CUK set up the Living Wage campaign and are currently campaigning for limitation of detention of asylum seekers, as well as putting pressure on Taunton Deane Council to accept responsibility for sheltering refugees.

Questions included:

  • what would we get as a group if we affiliate;
  • how are decisions made with CUK ;
  • what are the core values and guidelines;
  • what is community organising?

After discussion it was agreed that we should continue to keep in touch and campaign together where appropriate.

There was no proposal to affiliate at this time.

You can find out more about Citizens’ UK on their website.
